Is ‘Lil’ Touch’ The Successful ‘Debut’ That Girls’ Generation’s New Oh!GG Anticipated?
On September 5th, the new sub-unit of hit girl group Girls’ Generation, Oh!GG, released their debut song ‘Lil’ Touch’. The new sub-group includes Taeyeon, Sunny, Hyoyeon, Yuri, and YoonA, the original five members of Girls’ Generation. This comeback is definitely a shocker to “SONE” (the term of endearment for Girls’ Generation’s fandom) due to last year’s incident where the three members Tiffany Young, Seohyun, and Sooyoung decided to leave SM Entertainment, leading people to believe the girl group had reached its demise.
Enter Lil’ Touch, a track that features a more mature side of Girls’ Generation, with lyrics like “I just wanna kiss boy”, “Just give me a little touch”, clearly spelling out that they are no longer little girls, but sexy women. Unlike all their other MVs, which are predominantly fresh, pure, and energetic, this MV plays with a hide-and-seek tone, with a feel of danger with women aiming for love.
So how is the market taking it? The song has already ranked Top 5 during its first hour on the Melon Chart (Korea’s biggest music streaming platform), which clearly doesn’t compare with the peak of Girls’ Generation, but for a group that is re-debut-ing after 11 years, the response is far from negative. The sales copies of the first five days have hit over 20K––not the best comparative to other K-pop girl groups, but it’s still leading.
It’s still a question as to whether Oh!GG compares with Girls’ Generation, with only five members left, needless to say the strongest members of the original group. And at the end of the day, who can really take their place in the K-Pop market, a market they have ruled for more than 10 years?
